Dr. Islam is an Associate Professor and a Principal Investigator in the Department of Clinical Sciences and Education at the Karolinska Institutet, Sweden's largest center for medical training and research, famous for many reasons including its role in the award of the Nobel Prize. Dr. Islam is also a specialist in internal medicine and is a consultant physician at the University Hospital Uppsala.

Dr. Islam has published approximately 40 peer reviewed publications in the area of islet research and is editor of the book "The Islets of Langerhans". He is currently editing a book on the Transient Receptor Potential Channels. He is a pioneer of the calcium-induced calcium release concept in beta cells and has contributed substantially to the understanding of calcium signalling in β-cells.

Dr. Islam was awarded the prestigious Career Development Award of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, Golden Jubilee award of the Chittagong Medical College and the prestigious Anders Fredrick Regnells prize of the Swedish Medical Society.
